Overview
Chulu East Peak (6,584m) lies in the Manang Himal, forming part of the greater Damodar Himal range alongside Chulu West. This striking peak is framed by dramatic natural boundaries: the Marsyangdi River and Mesokanta La to the south, Kali Gandaki Valley to the west, and Parchekya La (5,447m) to the north. Located southeast of Chulu West, Chulu East may be relatively smaller in height, but it offers a more technically demanding climb.
Mountain Views and Landscape Diversity
From the summit, climbers are rewarded with sweeping views of some of Nepal’s most iconic peaks—Annapurna Massif, Dhaulagiri, Tilicho Peak, Mt. Manaslu, and beyond. The route leading to the peak is a visual delight, featuring lush forests, diverse terrains, and dramatic alpine scenery typical of the Annapurna region.
Technical Climb for Experienced Adventurers
Chulu East is considered a technically challenging climb, not recommended for beginners. Mountaineers attempting this peak should be proficient with gear such as crampons, ice axes, ropes, and must be comfortable with techniques like knot tying and using fixed lines on snow and ice.
Route Overview
The journey starts with a drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar, following the classic Annapurna Circuit Trail. Within a week, the route leads trekkers into the higher elevations, eventually reaching the Chulu East Base Camp. After summiting, the descent takes climbers over the iconic Thorong La Pass (5,416m) and continues toward the sacred site of Muktinath. From there, the trek concludes with a descent to Jomsom, followed by a short scenic flight to Pokhara.
