Centered around traditional slate-roofed settlements perched along the southern ridges of Lamjung Himal (6,988 m), this trail explores iconic heritage villages including Ghalegaon, Ghanapokhara, and Bhujung. Itinerary
Follow our carefully planned Gurung Heritage Trail 6 Days itinerary, designed with proper acclimatization and comfortable trekking days throughout the journey.
Depart early morning by private vehicle along the Prithvi Highway to Dumre, turning north along the Marsyangdi River valley to the district headquarters of Besisahar. Meet your local trekking crew and begin walking along the subtropical riverbank past waterfalls and terraced rice paddies to the riverside Gurung village of Khudi.
Day 1
Ascend through subtropical forests of oak, rhododendron, and bamboo. The stone-paved staircase trail winds past small farming hamlets, citrus orchards, and cascading mountain waterfalls. Arrive in Ghalegaon, a model SAARC eco-tourism heritage village, where local mothers' groups (Aama Samuha) welcome you with flower garlands, traditional music, and tika.
Day 2
Rise early to the village viewpoint for a sunrise panorama illuminating Annapurna II (7,937 m), Lamjung Himal, Machhapuchhre, and Mount Manaslu (8,163 m). Tour the Gurung Cultural Museum, organic tea gardens, and the Uttar Kanya temple. In the afternoon, take a scenic ridge walk to neighboring Ghanapokhara village, renowned for its honey-hunting heritage.
Day 3
Follow a stone path along lush forested hillsides, descending through oak woods and bamboo groves. Arrive in Bhujung, an ancient village consisting of over 500 tightly clustered stone-and-slate houses. Explore the village's historic watermill, organic tea processing center, and the sacred Kaiyo temple, enjoying traditional evening folk music.
Day 4
Descend into the river gorge, crossing a suspension bridge over the Midim Khola past hidden waterfalls. Climb steadily through terraced farmlands and forest canopies to the peaceful settlement of Pasgaun. Savor authentic village life untouched by modernization, staying with local families in traditional stone houses.
Day 5
Trek down through terraced farmlands and sub-tropical valleys to the roadhead at Pakhurikot or Rabidanda. Meet your private vehicle for the scenic drive past Begnas Lake to your hotel in Lakeside Pokhara, celebrating the completion of the Gurung Heritage Trail.
Day 6
Things To Know
Requires an Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit and TIMS Card. Maximum elevation is 2,095 m at Ghalegaon (viewpoints reaching 2,200 m). Accommodations are community homestays where guests stay with local host families, enjoying clean private rooms and traditional organic home-cooked meals.
