The 14-Day Annapurna Circuit Trek is one of the world's premier high-altitude loop journeys, encircling the giant Annapurna massif. Starting in the subtropical green terraced hills of Dharapani, the route transitions steadily into the arid, Tibetan-influenced rain shadow of the Manang Valley. After strategic acclimatization days surrounded by Annapurna II, III, IV, and Gangapurna, you will tackle the pre-dawn crossing of Thorong La Pass (5,416 m). Descending into the trans-Himalayan plateau of Lower Mustang, you visit the ancient sacred temple of Muktinath and trace the deep canyon of the Kali Gandaki back to Pokhara.
Mandatory permits include the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit and TIMS Card. Maximum elevation reaches 5,416 m at Thorong La Pass. Acclimatization schedules in Manang must be respected, and daily blood oxygen checks are conducted with pulse oximeters by licensed lead guides.
Depart Kathmandu early morning by private 4WD vehicle along the Prithvi Highway to Besisahar. Transfer onto the rugged dirt road running along the Marsyangdi River canyon, passing steep waterfalls, cliffside trails, and the villages of Chamje and Tal before arriving in the stone settlement of Dharapani.
Follow the Marsyangdi River valley through dense forests of blue pine, oak, and spruce. Pass through the Tibetan-style village of Bagarchhap and Timang for your first unobstructed view of Mount Manaslu (8,163 m). Continue past apple orchards and suspension bridges to reach Chame, the administrative center of Manang district.
Cross the river and walk through pine woodlands where the valley narrows sharply. The trail emerges directly beneath Paungda Danda, an enormous curved rock face rising 1,500 meters sheer out of the river. Cross back over the Marsyangdi to climb the winding stone steps into Upper Pisang, offering panoramic views across the Annapurna II and IV ridges.
Take the high scenic northern trail climbing steeply to the cliffside village of Ghyaru (3,670 m). Walk the panoramic balcony trail overlooking the entire Manang valley to Ngawal for lunch. Descend gently past the ancient stupas of Braga to enter the wide, flat valley basin of Manang village.
To adapt your body to the thinning atmosphere, take a morning acclimatization hike to turquoise Gangapurna Lake and the high Chongkor ridge viewpoint. Take in dramatic views of the Gangapurna Icefall, Annapurna III, and Tilicho Peak before spending the afternoon exploring Manang's old monastery and bakery cafes.
Leave the main valley behind and branch north, climbing steadily out of Manang. Pass through the small settlement of Gunsang, crossing open juniper scrub and scree slopes where blue sheep and Himalayan griffons frequently appear. Cross a wooden suspension bridge to reach the alpine grazing meadows of Yak Kharka.
A short but critical high-altitude ascent. Follow the moraine path along the Jarsang Khola, cross a narrow suspension bridge, and traverse a well-defined scree slope to reach the foot of the pass at Thorong Phedi (4,525 m). Hikers feeling strong can push up the steep 45-minute switchback ridge to sleep at Thorong High Camp (4,850 m).
Start at 4:00 AM under freezing alpine starlight to avoid midday summit winds. Climb steadily over rocky moraines and snow slopes to reach the prayer-flag-strewn crest of Thorong La Pass (5,416 m). Celebrate the milestone with hot tea before beginning the steep, 1,600-meter descent down loose gravel into the sacred pilgrimage town of Muktinath.
Explore the holy 108 water spouts and eternal flame at Muktinath Temple. Descend the arid plateau of Lower Mustang to the medieval mud-brick fortress village of Kagbeni—the gateway to Upper Mustang. Follow the windy floor of the Kali Gandaki River canyon to the white-walled, cobbled apple capital of Marpha.
Follow the Kali Gandaki riverbed past Tukuche village, home to historic Thakali traders. The valley deepens into the world's deepest river gorge between the massive ramparts of Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) to the west and Annapurna I (8,091 m) to the east. Check into your lodge at Kalopani surrounded by pine forests.
Descend dramatically along the gorge out of the alpine rain shadow into subtropical green valleys. Pass the thunderous cascades of the Rupse Chhahara waterfall. Arrive at Tatopani to spend the afternoon soaking in natural riverside thermal pools to soothe tired muscles.
Leave the river valley to tackle a sustained, steep uphill forest climb. Pass through the traditional Magar and Gurung villages of Ghara, Shikha, and Chitre. Re-enter lush rhododendron forests and ascend the stone path up to the blue-roofed mountain outpost of Ghorepani.
Pre-dawn summit hike to Poon Hill for a 360-degree sunrise panorama across Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and the Annapurnas. Descend the 3,300 stone steps through Ulleri and Tikhedhungga to Birethanti. Meet your private vehicle for the drive back to your hotel in Lakeside Pokhara.
Return to Kathmandu via tourist coach along the Prithvi Highway or opt for a 25-minute morning mountain flight. Transfer to your hotel to wrap up the complete Annapurna Circuit expedition.
