The 20-Day Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek is the ultimate Himalayan wilderness expedition. Journeying to the far-eastern border of Nepal, you explore the untouched foothills of Mount Kanchenjunga (8,586 m)—the third highest mountain in the world. Far removed from the teahouse crowds of Everest and Annapurna, this epic route connects both the North Base Camp (Pangpema) and South Base Camp (Oktang) by crossing the dramatic, high-altitude ridgelines of the Sele La Pass. You will traverse wildly diverse ecosystems, ascending from subtropical cardamom fields and dense rhododendron forests (home to the elusive red panda and snow leopard) up to the groaning ice seracs of the massive Yalung Glacier.

Requires a Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and a Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project (KCAP) permit. Government regulations mandate a minimum group size of two trekkers accompanied by a licensed Nepali guide. The maximum elevation reaches 5,143 m at Pangpema. While basic teahouses now exist along the entire route, amenities are highly rustic compared to mainstream trails.

Cost Included/Exclude

  • Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and Kanchenjunga Conservation Area (KCAP) Permit
  • Round-trip domestic flights (Kathmandu – Bhadrapur – Kathmandu)
  • Private 4WD ground transportation (Bhadrapur/Ilam – Sekathum & Khebang – Bhadrapur)
  • Government-licensed, high-altitude mountain trekking guide and porter support team
  • 19 nights lodge and basic teahouse accommodation along the route
  • All three daily meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) during trek days
  • Daily pulse oximeter blood oxygen saturation monitoring and comprehensive first aid kit
  • Emergency satellite communication support, staff insurance, and government taxes
  • International airfare and Nepal tourist visa fees
  • Travel and medical insurance covering emergency high-altitude helicopter evacuation
  • Hotel nights in Kathmandu outside the set itinerary
  • Hot showers, Wi-Fi connectivity, and electronic device charging fees at rustic lodges
  • Personal trekking gear, minus-20°C sleeping bag, bottled beverages, and staff tips

Day To Day Itinerary

Board a morning flight from Kathmandu over the eastern Himalayas to the lowland Terai city of Bhadrapur. Meet your private vehicle and drive north into the cooler, rolling green hills of Ilam, Nepal's famous tea-growing region. Settle into your hotel surrounded by vast, terraced tea estates.

Accommodation: Hotel (Ilam)
Meal Included: L/D

Embark on a long, scenic 4WD journey deeper into the eastern mountains. The road winds through the district hub of Taplejung and descends into the deep gorge of the Tamor River. Continue along the rugged dirt tracks to the small riverside settlement of Sekathum, the official starting point of the trek.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

Cross the suspension bridge over the Ghunsa Khola and enter the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area. The trail is steep and demanding, navigating narrow cliffside paths above the roaring river. Ascend through dense bamboo and cardamom forests, passing scattered Limbu and Sherpa farmsteads to reach the Tibetan-influenced hamlet of Amjilosa.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

Walk through pristine, uninhabited forests of oak, bamboo, and rhododendron. The area is a protected habitat for Himalayan black bears and red pandas. The trail climbs steadily, crossing several small streams and waterfalls before opening up into the flat alpine pasture and settlement of Gyabla (Kyapra).

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

Descend to the riverbank and walk through a wide, U-shaped glacial valley. Pass the Tibetan refugee settlement of Phale, where you can visit a small wooden Gompa and purchase hand-woven local carpets. Continue through pine and larch forests to Ghunsa, the largest and most prosperous Sherpa village in the region.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

Take a vital rest day to adapt to the thinning air. Hike up the steep ridge on the opposite side of the Ghunsa Khola toward the Dudh Kund viewpoint (approx. 4,000 m). Return to the village in the afternoon to wash clothes, rest, and explore the ancient local monastery and carpet-weaving workshops.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

The trek enters high alpine terrain, walking through juniper and dwarf rhododendron scrub along the glacial riverbank. Navigate carefully across loose scree slopes and old landslide zones. As the valley opens, the spectacular north face of Mount Jannu (Kumbhakarna, 7,710 m) dominates the skyline above the summer herding outpost of Kambachen.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

Spend a second acclimatization day exploring the alpine basin. Hike up the lateral moraine of the Jannu Glacier to reach the Jannu Viewpoint, getting face-to-face with the sheer, terrifying ice walls of Kumbhakarna. Look out for blue sheep grazing on the high rocky ridges before returning to Kambachen.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

Climb higher into the desolate, wind-swept wilderness of the upper Kanchenjunga glacier. Cross boulder fields and icy streams, with massive peaks like Wedge Peak and Nepal Peak closing in around you. Arrive at Lhonak, a stark, sandy plain surrounded by towering glacial moraines, offering basic stone-hut accommodation.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

Set out early, hiking along the rocky crest of the Kanchenjunga Glacier lateral moraine. The trail is rugged and undulating. Reach Pangpema (5,143 m), the North Base Camp, adorned with prayer flags. Stand in awe of the colossal north face of Kanchenjunga (8,586 m) and its surrounding ice seracs before retreating to Lhonak to sleep.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

With the northern objective complete, retrace your steps down the valley. The descent allows for much easier breathing in the oxygen-rich air. Pass back through Kambachen, navigating the landslide zones, and return to the warm fires and comfortable lodges of Ghunsa.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

Branch off the main valley and begin a steep, sustained climb up through dense rhododendron and birch forests. Break through the tree line into high alpine meadows to reach the isolated stone huts of Sele La Base Camp, positioned right at the foot of the high ridge crossing.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

A demanding and spectacular day crossing four high alpine ridges connecting the north and south base camps. Ascend to Sele La (4,290 m), traverse a high barren plateau to Sinion La (4,460 m), push over Mirgin La (4,480 m), and finally cross Sinelapche Bhanjyang (4,646 m) with sweeping views of Makalu and Everest in the distance. Descend steeply to the settlement of Cheram.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

Hike up the ablation valley alongside the snout of the massive Yalung Glacier. Pass the summer pastures of Ramche and continue along the moraine edge to the Oktang Viewpoint (4,730 m), the official South Base Camp. Enjoy an immense, amphitheater view of the Kanchenjunga south face, Kabru, and Rathong, before returning to Cheram.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

Begin a long, steady descent back into the forested lower valleys. The trail follows the Simbuwa Khola, dropping steeply through dense, ancient rhododendron and pine canopies. The air becomes significantly warmer and richer as you arrive at the riverside clearing of Tortong.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

Climb out of the Simbuwa Khola valley, ascending through a tricky landslide zone to the crest of Lasiya Bhanjyang (3,310 m). Descend through thick forests and bamboo groves into the Amji Khola valley, arriving at Yamphudin, a culturally diverse village inhabited by Sherpas, Limbus, and Rais.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

Walk through the warm, lush foothills, contouring around terraced farming hillsides and rural agricultural villages. The trail crosses several small streams and suspension bridges, offering a deep immersion into the traditional lowland village life of eastern Nepal before arriving at Khebang.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

Meet your private 4WD vehicle at the roadhead in Khebang. Embark on a bumpy, scenic drive descending rapidly from the hills back to the flat plains of the Terai. Drive through Ilam’s tea estates to reach the bustling lowland hub of Birtamod or Bhadrapur.

Accommodation: Hotel
Meal Included: B/L

Transfer to Bhadrapur Airport for your morning flight back to the capital. Watch the entire eastern Himalayan range roll by your window. Our airport representative will transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu for a well-deserved hot shower and rest.
