The 18-Day Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek is an expedition into one of Nepal's most secluded and culturally preserved restricted Himalayan regions. Sheltered behind the Dhaulagiri range in the trans-Himalayan rain shadow, Lower Dolpo preserves intact Tibetan and pre-Buddhist Bonpo traditions. The route leads past the roaring cascades of the Suli Gad waterfall to the legendary turquoise waters of Shey Phoksundo Lake (3,611 m). Crossing two challenging high-altitude passes—Numa La (5,238 m) and Baga La (5,169 m)—the trail opens into the barren valleys, stone chortens, and yak pastures of Dho Tarap before descending the dramatic river canyons back to Juphal.

Requires a Lower Dolpo Restricted Area Permit (RAP, USD 20/week), Shey Phoksundo National Park Entry Permit, and registered mountain guide support (minimum group size of 2). Maximum elevation reaches 5,238 m at Numa La Pass. The circuit involves a mix of basic teahouses and wild camping/tented camps around the high passes.

Cost Included/Exclude

  • Lower Dolpo Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and Shey Phoksundo National Park Permit
  • Round-trip domestic flights (Kathmandu – Nepalgunj – Juphal – Nepalgunj – Kathmandu)

Day To Day Itinerary

Board an afternoon flight from Kathmandu across the southern lowlands to Nepalgunj, the main gateway city in the western Terai. Transfer to your hotel for an expedition briefing and gear check as you prepare for the remote mountain flights into Dolpo.

Accommodation: Hotel (Nepalgunj)
Meal Included: D

Take an early morning mountain flight over jagged foothills to the short mountain airstrip of Juphal. Meet your local porter and camping team, organize gear loads, and begin walking downhill through terraced wheat fields. Follow the wide Thuli Bheri river valley eastward along a well-defined trail to Dunai, the administrative capital of Dolpa district.

Accommodation: Teahouse / Camp
Meal Included: B/L/D

Cross the suspension bridge over the Thuli Bheri and head north into the pristine Shey Phoksundo National Park, registering permits at the Sulighat checkpoint. Walk alongside the rushing turquoise waters of the Suli Gad river through lush forests of blue pine, fir, and bamboo. Cross multiple wooden cantilever bridges to reach the small forest settlement of Chhepka.

Accommodation: Teahouse / Camp
Meal Included: B/L/D

Climb steadily through cedar and birch woodlands alongside the river. Cross the Suli Gad and ascend through wild pine forests to Rechi for lunch. Continue climbing the valley side to Jharana Hotel, where you are treated to a distant, spectacular view of Nepal's highest waterfall (167-meter Phoksundo Waterfall) cascading from the lake above.

Accommodation: Teahouse / Camp
Meal Included: B/L/D

Descend through steep forest switchbacks to the confluence of the Suli Gad and Pungmo Khola. Follow the riverbank through thick cedar woods before making a final climb through open meadows to the ancient village of Ringmo. Walk a few minutes past the stone houses to arrive at the unforgettable, crystal-clear turquoise expanse of Shey Phoksundo Lake.

Accommodation: Teahouse / Camp
Meal Included: B/L/D

Spend the day exploring the spiritual and natural wonders of Phoksundo. Walk along the lakeside cliffs following trails featured in the film 'Himalaya / Caravan'. Visit the 900-year-old Tshowa Bon Gompa perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the lake, observing ancient pre-Buddhist Bon religious ceremonies, masks, and murals.

Accommodation: Teahouse / Camp
Meal Included: B/L/D

Leave Ringmo and trace the dramatic cliffside trail along the western edge of Phoksundo Lake, carved directly into vertical rock faces above the blue water. Cross the flood plain at the northern end of the lake and climb through birch and pine forests alongside the Phoksundo Khola to reach the wilderness meadow of Chunemba.

Accommodation: Tented Camp
Meal Included: B/L/D

Branch eastward into a narrow, rugged glacial canyon. Climb steadily through alpine scrub and barren scree slopes, following the Tuk Kyaksa Khola. The vegetation disappears completely as you gain elevation, entering the dramatic high-altitude wilderness at the base of the Baga La pass to set up camp under the peaks.

Accommodation: Tented Camp
Meal Included: B/L/D

Start early in the crisp mountain air to cross the first high pass. Ascend a steep, switchbacking moraine trail to the prayer flags marking Baga La Pass (5,169 m). Savor incredible vistas of the Kanjirowa massif and the arid Dolpo plateau before making a steep, rocky descent down the eastern valley into the river basin at Danigar.

Accommodation: Tented Camp
Meal Included: B/L/D

Tackle the highest and most demanding pass of the circuit. A sustained, strenuous ascent over loose shale and moraine ridges leads to the crest of Numa La (5,238 m). The summit delivers unobstructed 360-degree panoramas extending across Mount Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) and the endless barren ridges of Tibet. Descend a scree trail to camp at Pelung Tang.

Accommodation: Tented Camp
Meal Included: B/L/D

Follow the stream down past alpine meadows into the wide, cultivated valley of Dho Tarap—one of the highest permanently inhabited human settlements in the world. Pass stone Mani walls, fields of barley and buckwheat, and clusters of flat-roofed mud-stone houses inhabited by Magars and Tibetan-heritage Dolpo-pa communities.

Accommodation: Teahouse / Camp
Meal Included: B/L/D

Take a well-deserved rest day to explore Dho Tarap's rich cultural heritage. Visit local Bon and Sakya Buddhist monasteries, including the historic Shipchok Gompa. Interact with local villagers, observe traditional yak-herding life, and wander along centuries-old chortens scattered across the valley floor.

Accommodation: Teahouse / Camp
Meal Included: B/L/D

Begin your descent following the Tarap Chu river down a dramatic canyon. The valley narrows into a sheer gorge where the trail is carved directly into cliffs high above the roaring river. Cross modern steel bridges over narrow chasms, navigating boulder-strewn paths to pitch camp in the grassy clearing of Kamakharka.

Accommodation: Tented Camp
Meal Included: B/L/D

Continue descending the steep Tarap gorge, where waterfalls plunge hundreds of feet from hanging side valleys. The barren desert landscape gives way to pine, juniper, and wild rose bushes. Cross multiple wooden suspension bridges over the churning river to reach the pleasant village of Khanigaon.

Accommodation: Teahouse / Camp
Meal Included: B/L/D

Follow the river trail down through cedar and oak forests to the confluence of the Tarap Chu and Barbung Khola. Cross the high suspension bridge to enter Tarakot, a historic fortress town (Dzong) that once collected tolls on ancient trans-Himalayan trading caravans. Visit the hilltop Sandul Gompa overlooking the valley.

Accommodation: Teahouse / Camp
Meal Included: B/L/D

Follow the gentle downhill trail along the southern bank of the Thuli Bheri river. Pass through small agricultural hamlets, suspension bridges, and terraced rice fields, enjoying the warm, oxygen-rich air before arriving back at the district headquarters of Dunai.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

Make the final climb out of the river valley, ascending through terraced farming communities back to the hillside airstrip town of Juphal. Celebrate the successful completion of the remote circuit trek with your guide and porter crew over an evening farewell dinner.

Accommodation: Teahouse
Meal Included: B/L/D

Board an early morning flight from Juphal to Nepalgunj, followed by a connecting flight back to Kathmandu. Meet our airport representative for private transfer back to your hotel, concluding the 18-day Lower Dolpo expedition.
