The 4-Day Yangmari Peak (Ama Yangri) Trek is a scenic and spiritual short ridge trek into the sacred Helambu region of Sindhupalchok. Rising to 3,771 meters (12,372 ft), Ama Yangri is revered by the indigenous Hyolmo (Yolmo) Buddhist community as the mother protector deity of the valley. The journey ascends from the subtropical river basin of Melamchi through ancient apple orchards, prayer-flagged chortens, and the cultural stone hub of Tarke Ghyang (2,600 m). Ascending the forested ridge above the tree line, hikers reach the summit chorten for a 360-degree sunrise panorama illuminating the snowcapped peaks of Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Gauri Shankar, and the Jugal Himal before descending via the picturesque village of Sermathang.
Requires a Langtang National Park Entry Permit, Helambu Rural Municipality Entry Registration, and TIMS Card. Maximum elevation reaches 3,771 m at Ama Yangri summit. The route is accessible entirely by road via private 4WD from Kathmandu, making it an ideal short high-viewpoint trek with zero mountain flight dependencies.
Depart Kathmandu early morning by private 4WD vehicle along the mountain highway past Sankhu, crossing over the valley rim to Melamchi Bazaar. Ascend the scenic dirt road tracing the Melamchi Khola gorge, winding past terraced farmland, waterfalls, and the settlements of Timbu and Kakani. Arrive in the historic Hyolmo stone village of Tarke Ghyang to explore its centuries-old Buddhist monastery and prayer courtyards.
Rise early under starlight to begin the steady ridge climb. Ascend through moss-draped rhododendron, fir, and juniper cloud forests, breaking onto the open alpine grassland ridge. Reach the prayer-flag-draped summit chorten of Ama Yangri (3,771 m) as dawn breaks. Savor a 360-degree panorama of Langtang Lirung (7,227 m), Dorje Lakpa, Jugal Himal, Gauri Shankar, and the rolling Helambu valleys. Descend back down the forest trail to Tarke Ghyang to celebrate with butter tea and hot meals.
Follow the panoramic balcony trail contouring around the hillside above the valley floor. Walk along flat stone-paved paths through shaded pine and oak woods past mani walls and chortens. Pass the traditional Hyolmo villages of Ghangyul and Chumik before arriving in the serene village of Sermathang, renowned for its ancient monasteries, apple orchards, and sweeping views down to the Indrawati River.
Descend gentle stone trails past agricultural fields and pine groves down to the roadhead at Melamchi Pul or Kakani. Meet your private vehicle for the return drive winding along the highway via Melamchi Bazaar and Sankhu, arriving back in Kathmandu by late afternoon to conclude your Ama Yangri adventure.
